Week 7: Recovery and a new toy

It has been a much appreciated recovery week this week. There was a time when 45 minute runs featured in a big week, now however, they are just a gentle jaunt to keep the legs turning over.

The big news must be the arrival of the new toy, the Tacx Bushido Turbo trainer, completely wireless and oozing with features. Having been an owner of a Tacx Fortius I was thankfully not to star struck by the feature set. What was quite different was the fact that you have to manage the charging of the dynamo on the turbo before you can use it properly. The resistence from the head unit goes into overload initially, to the extent where you can hardly turn the pedals. However, after a few minutes it does calm its self down and you start to get resistance more akin to riding on a level road. I also tried it with the Tacx Trainer Software which I had a pirate evaluation version that worked quite well on the Mac using VMWare. I will see how i get on with the turbo by its self before I spend another pile of cash on a legitimate copy of the Software. The next couple of weeks will be building the hours again, that combined with another trip away to London will push my organisational skills. In the mean time I have made the most of a quiet week to get as much personal admin sorted as possible. Hopefully that will see me through the next couple of weeks.

Week 6

10hours 22minute !!! Whats that all about?

Well I banged it out, it was scheduled to be a pretty heavily focused run week, and by Thursday as predicted my legs were not that interested in playing anymore. Met up with one of the locel triathlon talent Nathan Jolly, at the pool, on Saturday and was good the catch up and talk triathlon bollox without worrying about how much i was boring anyone.

I got the Turbo ordered, a Tacx Bushido, totally wireless and can be connected into the computer. Having shopped around for ages for the best deal, I ended up getting it from a bike shop in Germany. I saved £150 on the UK prices for the same model, plus shipping was free. Should hopefully arrive in a next few days.

The cold weather continues, although at least its sunny and wind free. This week also saw the return to the surfboats, this time of year it's flat water on the south coast. With a new intake of newbies, i'm now elevated to the rank of someone who should know what he's doing. Having spent the majorirty of last season battling with what place Surfboat rowing has in my life I think I have resolved that minor head crisis. Surfboat rowing represents everything that triathlon isn't. Every part of triathlon training is all about measurables and progression. Whilst this is great and very developmental it can be mentally quite fatiguing and turn you into an extremely dull person. Surfboat rowing on the other hand is by default chaos, with no clear path, and no measurables. Whilst this might seem pointess and a waste of time from the perspective of an OCD triathlete, it serves the purpose to reset your head and be part of a team to achieve a goal, albeit a little random at times.

Training review Weeks 3 through 5

Been a busy few weeks and the temperature has dropped to proper winter levels.

Swimming: Still feeling a little off the pace with this compared to 18 months ago, I'm sure it will come back , however, if im honest it isnt to much of the problem, a minute or two lost in the swim can easily made up in the bike.

I met up with my coach and we thrashed ot the race dates for this coming season, most clashes have been avoided and the cost of entries been kept to a manageable level. Just have to incorporate the time trialling dates which I will hopefully be going on in the background to keep the biking sharp, (well to get it sharp!).

I need to get the replacment Turbo trainer sorted in the next week or so, as i'm not going to maintain enthusiasm to stay out on the bike in the cold/rain/wind etc, even with the best kit in the world. The running distances are increasing and my legs are holding up pretty well, they are recovering well, and usaully by the end of the third week in gagging for the recovery week, which means that the increamental increases are pretty much where they should be.Next week will see the biggest week yet, so will be interesting to see how I cope with that.

Week 01 & 02: Training and Review

Well the past two weeks have tested my commitment and general motivation, New year in London, and the prospect of getting back into the groove of a new year, can test anyones resolve, thankfully I seemed to have passed with flying colours. All training sessions were hit with little fuss.
